"…exquisitely evocative of the finest popmeisters of the past three decades…music that is very new and fresh, unlike anything I've ever heard before." - Bill Fisher, Victory Review

Sugartown was born in 2000 as a creative vehicle for Seattle based singer-songwriter and pianist Andrea Wittgens. Over the past few years Wittgens, along with an impressive crew of talented collaborators including guitarist and co-producer Vincent Gates, has recorded two albums: Blue-Eyed Fool and the most recent, How Do You Love, Aquamarine?

Stylistically, think of an amalgamation of Tom Waits, Aimee Mann, and Rufus Wainwright: memorable melodies, vocals smoother than cognac, lush vocal harmonies and lots of 'em. However, even in their grooviest of pop anthems, you'll catch many strains of other musical styles. Take, for instance, the decidedly jazz flavor of the stride piano or the country-tinged wail of a steel guitar. Rip a chorus or two from the pages of Baroque old-timers Bach and Handel and you've got yourself quite the sonic adventure. We invite you to listen for yourself.

Some of Sugartown's unique blend is due to Wittgens' musical upbringing. Born in Nova Scotia Canada, she grew up under the strong influence of her parents sizable jazz record collection, rigorous classical piano lessons and of course the Top-40 songs that were able to make their way, static and all, to her finicky bedroom radio in her home town of Antigonish. Her lyrics, moody as the North Atlantic, slip easily from giddy earnestness to stormy sarcasm, always with an innovative spin on well-worn song themes like love, loneliness and madness.

Honey run and grab a shovel Baby's gone and lost her marbles on the side of the road.
I started off with good intentions but then in the end I kind of lost control of the load…
Starry Night I know why I can't be through with you

("Starry Night")

The album also undoubtedly owes its range of musical moods to the impressive crowd of local Seattle musicians who contributed to it. Musical guests include Will Dowd (Jessica Lurie Ensemble), Keith Lowe (Zony Mash, Fiona Apple), Andrew Scaglione (Left Hand Smoke), Paul Kemmish (Rockin' Teenage Combo, Das Rut), Jimm McIver (Jimm McIver and the Boxes) and Sue Corcoran (Looking for Sailors).

The band is actively gigging and includes Andrea on vocals and piano, Vince on guitars and backup vocals, Jimm McIver on guitars and backup vocals, and Joel Grow on bass.
